Estimating of efficacy of commercial environmental pesticides (mosquito vaporizer liquid).

Absrtact	Mosquito vaporizer liquids are popular and convenient to use for mosquito control or repellence, so it is necessary to analysis and estimate the effects of commercial products. There are 65 products of electric-vapor mosquito liquids, electric mats, and mosquito coil were registered as environmental insecticides in Environmental Protection Administration R. O. C. in 2002. 21of them are mosquito vaporizer liquids. 8 brands of mosquito vaporizer liquids were chosen to be examined. Experiments were conducted to compare the susceptibilities of different species and strains of mosquitoes in different commercial products. The efficacy data of each product were checked to clarify the coincidence with registration. In the aspect of susceptibilities of insecticides in different species and strains of mosquitoes, Culex quinquefaciatus has lower susceptibility than Aedes aegypti. A. aegypti in Kaohsiung has lower susceptibility than in TungKong. Prallethrin and Bioallethrin have better knockdown effect than Esbiothrin to C. quinquefaciatus. Esbiothrin and Bioallethrin get shorter KT50 to A. aegypti in TungKong, but less mortality. Prallethrin get longer KT50 but more mortality. The effective duration of those commercial products is longer than they were claimed on the package of products. The other environmental factors like temperature and wind are probably the reasons making unusual release. The efficacy tests of the commercial products of electro vapor mosquito liquids were less effective than the register in EPA. Lower insecticide susceptible of wild strains of mosquitoes might cause less effect. The efficacy standardization for applying license from EPA should be adapted to the local variation of mosquito strains. Repellent to mosquito or reducing biting rate should be take into considered for efficacy interpretation.
